MotorcycleDoes your teen want a motorcycle? Before you agree to your teenager getting a motorcycle, have a conversation about safety. We'd like to help you have that conversation. Here are some tips on what to talk about.

  1. While motorcycles can be fun, speed is a major problem with motorcycles. Talk with your teenager about why it is important to be aware of the speed limit, and the speed of others on the road. While driving in a car, take time to point out those drivers who probably wouldn't see a motorcycle, especially the ones going very fast. Analyze how a motorcyclist could be safer around these drivers and avoid accidents. It's also a good time to talk about how avoiding those accidents will save your teenager on motorcycle insurance.

  2. There are motorcycle safety classes that can give you and your teenager more confidence on the road. Both of you should take the class, even if you don't want a motorcycle license. With both of you taking the class, you will learn what your teenager is experiencing and be able to talk about safer driving. It will also show your teenager you want to understand why he or she wants a motorcycle. Many insurance companies even give discounts for taking such a course.

  3. Personal protection is important when riding a motorcycle. Take some time with your teenager to analyze the different types of riding gear—both for safety and style. Wearing a helmet is required in most states, but is also a sign to an insurance company that the rider is concerned about safety. Insurance companies want to know that motorcycle riders are concerned about safety.

So, next time you hear the hint or statement that your teenager wants a motorcycle, start the conversation with these three subjects.

Make sure your teen is covered. Call Sweet & Baker Insurance Brokers at (415) 512-2100 for more information on San Francisco motorcycle insurance.
