So after a few months since my last post and improved service recently, I have upped my rating to A-OK. Note I did receive a personal courtesy call from its CEO not long after my original rating / posting (Nice touch). I am sticking with S&B and will update again ( + or - ) if needed in the spirit of fairness.


I am an existing customer of Sweet & Baker and have been so for 15 years (Home / Autos etc.) They represent me for Safeco and while S&B used to be excellent and I have been happy until recently. They are now part of HUB Intl. and as far as I am concerned this has been a awful for customers (or for me at least). There seems to be a lot of staff churn and I just can't seem to get a call back / responses. I had solid dealings over the years with Elsie (who retired), she was responsive and reliable and since her or HUB, S&B customer service has gone downhill. Most recently we had dealings with Ellen (who left shortly after we started dealing with her) and now are with Josephine and it is impossible to get a response to our requests etc. from her. Very frustrating when auto coverage is involved and you don't know if you are covered and I have to go through them when dealing with Safeco etc. Sadly I must give them 1 star (genuinely tried to will myself to give them 2 stars but can't) and I am now in the process of looking elsewhere after 15 years. Accordingly, be mindful of my honest commentary above if you are considering S&B.

I, I am very happy with the service I've received from my Account Manager. They are a fine group of caring and knowledgeable people who'd do a great job for you, both personal insurance and business insurance. Call them!

We were referred this from my wife, Sally. We were both on All-state, but decided to move to this insurance because Sally said they have a great reputation and the broker, Annie Chen Lee was very friendly. Annie does a wonderful job explaining the insurance and goes out of her way to give us discounts on auto insurance and renters, just pretty much anything to save a buck on the insurance. Also, she did not give us the extra charge for paying monthly versus yearly insurance. She also guided us online as well, pretty easy to work and deal with 100% recommend.

In a desperate need to switch brokers, due to poor customer service, I reached out to Carmen Gaytan for help. She immediately took action, and wasted no time in referring our company to Casey Scollin. From the first point of contact, I knew we were in the right hands. Casey, just like Carmen, was very prompt in getting back to us and confirmed everything I would send him. Even when it was not yet known to Casey we would officially do business with him or not, I felt he always at any one moment gave us 200%. Casey made it very clear we would be given the best customer service possible once he personally came into our office to explain and compare thoroughly our current policies as well as offer us triple coverage for more or less the same price we were already paying for! Casey's expertise, knowledge, and work ethic reflects very much in the product of his work. Transferring to Sweet and Baker was a no-brainer!! It is very obvious Sweet and Baker recruits nothing but the best of the bay area. Carmen and Casey are great examples of that, they made this transfer as easy as a walk through the park!!

Came here for a homeowners insurance quote and worked directly with Bruce Callander. He was very knowledgeable and got me everything I needed. I would highly recommend this place, they definitely go the extra mile.

When we needed to insure a three-unit apartment building in San Francisco recently, Bruce Callander of Sweet and Baker could not have been more helpful. He and Elaine Sy checked with multiple companies to find us the best rate and even took pictures of the property to show companies that the building had been bolted to the foundation and the water heaters strapped to the walls. I highly recommend them!

Sweet and Baker helped us navigate through our application for covered California. A big shout out to Kelly Kobetsky and Arthur Burton who are tirelessly answered confused customers like us. They were very courteous , prompt and resourceful. Thank you!

Sweet and Baker is great! I've had renters insurance through them for a few years. My agent, Ellen Westberg, walks you through everything, tells you what you ACTUALLY need and what you don't, and explains in plain english the terms of the policies, payments, etc. She responds quickly and makes you feel like you can genuinely trust an insurance company. I recently bought a car and shopped around for other companies a bit, but decided to go through Sweet and Baker for auto ins. and ended up saving on coverages that didn't suit my needs. 5 stars!

I had a great experience with Sweet & Baker. They did a side by side comparison with a quote I received from AAA. They were very responsive and their rates were right inline with AAA and with better coverage! The service was excellent, they were very knowledgeable. I recently bought business insurance here and feel totally blessed to have stumbled upon these guys. We have an untraditional service and finding a company that understood our needs, was patient in answering my questions, followed up promptly, and that was just plain nice...well, was so nice!

I was in a pinch a few years back and needed renters insurance on very short notice. Shannon helped me at the time and was very clear, concise and helpful. She was able to get me coverage in a very timely manner. I have dealt with a few others there and never has a bad experience. These folks saying people are rude surprise me. I have always been quite pleased and would recommend their service to anyone.

I've used Forrest Wittenmeier and Carly Phelps for several years now for my autos and properties, and am generally very pleased with their level of attentive service and willingness to tailor my quotes to my needs. Their response time is fast, they make requested changes in a timely and competent manner, and they are always available to advise on claim-related issues. Five stars for business acumen.

I use Sweet & Baker to help manage all of the insurance needs for my company, and I could not be more pleased with the services they have provided. Not only have they proven to be exceptionally responsive, my broker (Denise) is proactive in taking care of our needs. We use them for all of our basic insurance policies, and Denise has been invaluable in helping me to establish a brand-new benefits package for us, whether suggesting cost-effective benefits or explaining how medical reimbursements work. When we were trying to decide on a healthcare plan, she provided detailed, easy-to-understand packages, and when I have questions (which is often), she answers my questions patiently and thoroughly.

On a personal note, I was recently on vacation and in need of a prescription. My local Walgreens said my insurance had expired, though Blue Cross assured me it had not. I called Sweet & Baker, and Jennifer (Denise was out of town) was kind and understanding. She realized that I was ill and offered to take over for me; she called Walgreens, she called Blue Cross, she got them together on a conference call, and she sorted everything out while I pounded the OTC cold medicine. Because of her commitment to outstanding customer service, I was able to avoid the headache of several hours of dealing with Walgreens and Blue Cross. (Thanks again, Jennifer!)

I am writing an unsolicited testimonial because of the exceptional treatment I received from Sweet & Baker during a very trying time for me recently. The story is as follows:

Upon returning to San Diego from my Thanksgiving break with my family in Florida, I discovered that my 2004 Audi A4 that I had purchased in May had been flooded. I repeat: my car had been FLOODED in San Diego! Crazy!

I contacted my Sweet & Baker agent, Forrest Wittenmier, who had recommended the specific Allied Insurance plan that I decided on in May. Forrest quickly checked to ensure that I was covered (I was!) and gave me an overview of what to expect from the entire process. In a matter of minutes, I went from completely distressed, to assured that someone was actually working for me to make sure I wasn't left without the resources to replace my car.

I would like to pause for a second on that last sentence, the one about an insurance company actually working for me, instead of trying to squeeze me. The rest of my experience with Allied was similar to conversation with Forrest - I felt as though Allied was entirely on my side, and that I had the security of S&B to back everything up. A very pleasant combination in a trying time.

Upon reporting my claim, the first Allied agent that I was put in touch with was Jose Gutierrez. Jose was extremely courteous, yet concise about what to expect from the business side of the situation. I was able to glean a great deal about what to come from Jose, and I always felt as though he was working to help me get my claim settled promptly and properly.

Next, I was directly to Steve Gulley who gave me all the specifics on the timeline of the process and went out of his way to keep the entire process visible to me, so I never felt in the dark at any step along the way. Again (this may be getting a little repetitive), I immediately had this innate sense that Steve was on my side, not trying to pinch pennies from me. I can not tell you how much inner stress was spared to me by Steve and Jose - they were incredible!!

The final part of the process, negotiating the settlement, was handled by Jose, after Steve had declared the vehicle totaled. I had prepped myself for a battle to ensure that I was given fair market value, and was once again astonished (see a common theme here?) when Jose's offer came in at almost exactly the figure that I had researched and estimated myself. There was no need to haggle, because Jose clearly had been given the authority to do the right thing and not low ball me. In a word: refreshing.

I contacted Forrest once again, to alert him about my new vehicle and inquire as to exactly what I needed to do to switch my insurance over. He made the transition as easy as possible for me, even getting me in direct email contact with the individual responsible for making the switch. The plan that Forrest had helped me choose had provided the exact peace of mind that I had been looking for when I contacted S&B in May.

I would like to individually recognize Forrest for his professional demeanor and attention to customer service. I know that I will be a Sweet & Baker for all of my insurance needs, and will continue to use Allied for my car insurance. A relationship of trust has been established for me, and in my mind, that is the most important characteristic an individual or organization can have with a customer.

Sweet & Baker have been wonderful to work with. They are knowledgeable, responsive and very easy to work with. Anytime I have a question or need something they respond immediately. They were able to save my company about 30%. They offer excellent service and I would highly recommend them.

I just want to say how happy I am in finding this place. The Yelp reviews actually paid off this time, so since i used Yelp to find them, it's only right to Yelp my experience.

First of all, Elaine did a fantastic  job with finding us commercial liability insurance. Our particular business has some unusual events and it's not easy to find someone to insure us in the first place, let alone finding us such a great deal. Thank you Elaine!

And then Arthur spent, I'm sure, at least 2 hours, going back and forth with me to find new health insurance before the deadline. I now have great health insurance, better then ever, due to Arthur.

He also took time to explain how the new Obama care program is different, and needs to be calculated differently - so I no longer hate the changes in the reform.

The kicker here is that because of the way new health reform works, Arthur did not get paid at all for doing this extra work.. So awesome Arthur, thank you so much, and please let everyone know to come to one of our cocktail classes  - on the house.  

I just had a really good conversation with Stafford about an hour ago about our insurance needs and to get a quote.  I'm still thinking about it now and so I wanted to write to you and let you know, because I feel like I want to recommend Sweet and Baker to everyone in business that I know based on this conversation with Stafford. 


It's rare these days that you find people who are so willing to help you out.  I got feeling of true integrity on the call, a real sense of partnership and being on the level.  He's been well coached it would seem, so well done there.
